Which Branch?

It's not always obvious which branch you should be in when joining Bectu - Freelancers often switch from job to job, and sometimes jobs can be PAYE rather than self-employed freelance contracts. We've made this page to try to help make it clearer

The Theatre Freelancers Branch of BECTU includes:

People whose work is primarily on a Freelance basis (take a look at Bectu’s definition of Freelance) within the theatre industry (this includes theatre, musical theatre, opera, dance and similar).

For an idea of what kinds of roles come under the Theatre Freelancers Branch, here are some of our current members’ roles:

Technical Managers
WHAM artists

Please Note

People working primarily within festival settings, live events, live music, etc. would come under Bectu’s Live Events Network instead of Theatre Freelancers.

People working primarily on Commercial West End contracts would come under Bectu’s West End Commercial Theatres Branch instead of Theatre Freelancers (these are generally not contracts taken on on a freelance/self-employed basis).

People working primarily in touring theatre would come under Bectu’s Theatres Touring Branch instead of Theatre Freelancers (these are generally not contracts taken on on a freelance/self-employed basis).

Members should generally move between Branches when their working situation changes - let Bectu know by:
